Pick the right characterization technique in a few clicks. Start from a research question, a result that looks wrong, or a study you are planning. Each path ends with the techniques to use, the order to run them in, the sample preparation they need, and what to watch out for.

Scope: the results are starting points for typical cases, not rules. Techniques marked † are outside this guide’s hands-on scope: they are named so you know they exist, and a lab that runs them should advise on sample prep and interpretation.
